Monday Musings – special 09/09/09 edition
Principle, not party…
In the summer, when I am home, I spend some time in a little Vermont country kitchen called Kay’s Restaurant. It is amazing what you hear and learn at Kay’s!
Last week I sat at a roundtable with a group of men who were engaged in all kinds of conversations. At one point another man joined the table, as he did the man beside me quickly got up and said he had to go. Two days later when I returned to the restaurant, the man who had quickly got up and left the table explained to me his actions. “You see, he said, the man who joined the table two days ago is our representative in the state senate. I had just engaged him in a conversation outside the restaurant telling him how I disagreed with the way he had voted on a recent issue in the senate and suggested that he was not representing the people’s opinion in his constituency.” Then he went on to tell him: “You voted for party, not for principle.”
That statement has stayed with me all week. There was a time when principle mattered. Today, we are more concerned about popularity then we are about principle.
09/09/09 is being used to launch the new digital recordings of the Beatle’s old albums. Some are suggesting that this may bring a whole new rise in popularity to a group from the past with half of its members dead and buried.
Why not use 09/09/09 to bring a whole new rise to an old word called “principle” before it too is dead and buried? Just something to think about!
Until next Monday…
