Keep your eyes on the cloud…
“By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.”Exodus 13:21 – 22
God’s way of providing direction and protection for the children of Israel as they left Egypt is a reminder for us today to keep our eyes on the cloud.
Notice that twice we are told the pillar of cloud and fire was ahead of them and in front of them. God knows that the best place to focus is in front of us, not behind. It is like trying to drive your car using the rear view mirror. Better make sure you have good insurance rates if you choose to drive in this way.
Once and a while, I have to remind myself to keep my eyes focused on the cloud in front of me. Just last week, I found myself taking my eyes off the cloud of God’s provision. It is budget time, and I began to feel the pressure of raising our 2010 budget. I was looking more in the rear view mirror than I was the road ahead, until I revisited a verse from Proverbs that I have been reading in my personal devotions.
“Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, but a good word makes it glad.”
Francis Chan, in his book “Crazy Love”, suggests that worry implies that we don’t quite trust God is big enough, powerful enough, or loving enough to take care of what’s happening in our lives.”
Somehow I think God knows what He is doing by keeping the pillar of cloud and fire in front of us instead of behind, so let’s be smart enough to keep our eyes on the cloud!! Besides, it will make for cheaper insurance rates!
Until next Monday…
