Combine it with faith…
Gilles & Francoise Gravel
My mother-in-law sent an excerpt to all her children yesterday from her daily devotional called “Direction” (Daily Devotions for Your Journey). I thought that those of you who read my blog would benefit from its content.
“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” Roman 8:28
A little boy is telling his Grandma how “everything” is going wrong: school, family problems, severe health problems, etc. Meanwhile Grandma is baking a cake. She asks her grandson if he would like a snack, which of course he does. “Here have some cooking oil.” “Yuck” says the boy. “How about a couple of raw eggs?” “Gross, Grandma!” “Would you like some flour then? Or may be baking soda? “ Grandma, those are all yucky!” To which Grandma replies: “Yes all those things seem bad all by themselves, but when they are put together in the right way, they make a wonderfully delicious cake!
God works the same way, Many times we wonder why he would let us go through such bad and difficult times. But God knows that when He puts those things all in His order, they always work for good! We just have to trust Him and eventually, they will all make something wonderful!”
Thanks Grandma! Thanks be to God. ……………
The ingredients alone may seem insignificant, or even “yucky.” But mix that with depression, with the financial challenge of paying the mortgage after the unexpected lay- off, while trying to save for your teen’s tuition college, and bake it in the heat of suburban stress and what do you get? A mess? No. A migraine? Maybe. A masterpiece? Definitively. Why? Because God is at work perfecting your patience, chiseling Christ-likeness into your soul, and sanding off the touch-edged residue of the person you used to be.
As a postscript to this devotional reading, I came across this verse in my devotions this morning: “For we also had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard it did not combine it with faith.” (Hebrews 4:2)
Let me encourage you to combine what you have read in this blog this morning with faith and watch God work in your life. If you know of someone who could benefit from this devotional reading today, why not pass it on to them.
Thanks Mamma for passing words of wisdom on to your children!!!
Until next Monday…
