15/09/10 from Nairobi
The Pentecostal Assemblies of Africa (PAOA) General Council of Bishops began last night. I have had the privilege of addressing them on two occasion to date and will have two more opportunities between now and Friday.
I am not one for a lot of statistics but these I can’t resist sharing. There are 45 bishops and church leaders present representing 14 nations across the Continent of Africa. During this morning’s session each of the bishops was asked to estimate the number of Pentecostal churches in their country as well as the total adult attendance and children’s attendance in each of those churches. Here are the results:
Total churches – 14,209
Adult attendance – 5,278,000
Children attendance – 3,129,000
You read it right, there is an estimated eight and one half million adults and children from over fourteen thousand Pentecostal African churches represented in the room here in Nairobi. It goes without saying how honoured I am to address these bishops but also the overwhelming sense of responsibility I feel in challenging them on the theme: “The Church as an Agent of Change for the Next Generation”.
Thank you for your ongoing prayers. I will keep you updated as best I can.
Until next time from Africa…
