Stepping into someone else’s world…

It is easy to form an opinion or to think you have an answer when looking from the outside in, but try stepping into someone else’s world for seventy-two hours and see if your opinions might change.

Last week, I spent seventy-two hours with a family that are dear to MJ and me.  Over the years, we have laughed together, cried together, vacationed together, and spent hours eating M&M’s and playing Skippo together.   During the last couple of years, we have spent a lot of time talking by phone and Skype, in an effort to encourage one another through a variety of life circumstances.

But last week, I stepped into their world and walked through what they are living right now.  I have discovered that before one can form an opinion about someone else’s journey, one is better to spend time walking where they are walking and living where they are hurting.

Ironically, this morning, I was reading in 1 Peter 4:12 & 13 :  “Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you.  But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when His glory is revealed.”

So, to the family that MJ and I love so much, thank you for allowing me to step into your world for seventy-two hours.  Thank you for teaching me not to form opinions until I know all the facts.  Thank you for modelling a spiritual depth that measures in feet not inches!

May you and scores of others, who find themselves in the midst of a trial, be encouraged by Peter’s words in 1 Peter 1:6 – 9:

“In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.  These have come so that your faith – of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire – may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honour, when Jesus Christ is revealed.  Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and even though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”

Until next Monday…
