Monday Musings 14/01/13
Three months can change a lot of things. MJ and I arrived in Kitwe to a new mall! From a Canadian perspective, this may not mean very much, but in Kitwe, this is huge.
We have a new grocery store, pizza parlour and ice cream shop and a new department store is yet to open. Yahoo!!!!
January 1, 2013 was also the launch of new money in Zambia. The money system here known as “kwacha”, has a new face and has dropped three zero’s. What used to be K50,000 is now K50. New to the system is K100’s. This is good from the perspective that the roll of money in the pocket is now about half the size when you leave the bank. The downside is that we now have a new coin system that will put holes in our pockets. You can’t win them all!
So, we return to a new mall and new money. Ironic isn’t it? We have new places to spend our new money.
I am reminded how we so often take so much for granted. In Canada, new malls are going up on a regular basis. Kitwe has been waiting for years for this mall to arrive. In some parts of the world, the thing we call progress is a very loooooooong, slooooooooow process. Process teaches patience, but when the moment arrives, it is worth the wait. MJ was like a kid in a candy shop the first day we went into the new Pik & Pay grocery store. A bakery with fresh bread, including four foot baguettes (well okay – three feet), full shelves, clean floors, and fresh milk are just a few of the things we are enjoying at our new mall. She went up and down every aisle, saying over and over again, “I can’t believe it, I can’t believe it, we have a new grocery store!” The only problem so far, is that the cashiers have a shortage of small change because they are waiting for the new coins from the bank. Go figure?
Okay, next week, “Monday Musings” will return to something a little more profound, but I could not help share our new found excitement here in Kitwe!
Until next Monday…
