Monday Musings (special Remembrance Day edition) – 11/11/13
Remembrance Day 2013 is not only an opportunity to honour the veterans who have fought for our freedom in the past; it provides a moment of silence from all the leadership scandals that are plaguing our country in the present.
Our beloved country is engaged in a war of a different kind – the battle for integrity! The mayor of Canada’s largest city has admitted to the use of drugs and alcohol related outbursts. Canada`s second largest city, the city I live in, is embroiled in a multi-layered corruption scandal. The Canadian Senate is in upheaval over the suggested inappropriate expense claims of three of its senators. Oh Canada, our home and native land, we have a heart problem!!!
Recently, I coined a phrase that has become the driving force behind the new Center for Leadership Integrity (CLI) that we are developing in South Africa – “Increasing the integrity of the leader, will increase the capacity of the church“. The personal development of all of us, who are in any form of leadership, is the key to increasing our integrity capacity. Canada needs leaders who find themselves on a disciplined path toward physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional health. Perhaps RTC (Reinventing the Church) should open a CLI branch in Canada!
I hesitate to criticize mayors and senators who are battling integrity issues in their lives. If anything, my heart hurts for them as they become the brunt of jokes for late night talk shows, and meat for the media lions around the world. Some may think their actions deserve this kind of scrutiny, but before we jump on the bandwagon of criticism, we had better make sure our personal life is in order and that we are prepared to live the following quotes from the Bible!
In Genesis 30:33 Jacob said: “My honesty (integrity) will testify for me in the future…“. David said in 1 Samuel 26:23, `The Lord rewards each man for his integrity and loyalty“ (NET). Psalm 25:21 says: “May integrity and uprightness protect me. “ Or how about Psalm 31:23, “The Lord protects those who have integrity, but he pays back in full the one who acts arrogantly. “ (NET).
When the integrity chain breaks, we need to work hard at restoring its weak links.
“Deliver Lord! For the godly have disappeared; people of integrity have vanished. “ Psalm 12:1 (NET)
“For the Lord is our sovereign protector. The Lord bestows favour and honour; he withholds no good thing from those who have integrity. “ Psalm 84:11
God, keep our land glorious and free from corruption. Give us leaders who will be remembered as veterans of integrity!!!!
