Monday Musings – What’s In a Name? (08/11/14)
Apparently a whole lot!
RTC announced a name change last week. After two years of consultation with church leaders from both Africa and Canada, we made the decision to change our name from Reinventing the Church to Revitalizing the Church.
Reinventing the Church was in good company for about six years. During that time, Mercedes Benz reinvented, General Motors reinvented, and just two weeks ago, MacDonald’s reinvented the wrap. But something happens when one talks about reinventing the church. Antenna’s go up, eyebrows are raised, suspicion surfaces and explanations are needed. As soon as the name Reinventing the Church is explained, people get it, understand it, and even like it. But what’s in a name if you have to explain it in order for people to get it?
The response to RTC’s new name has been very positive. I decided to include some of them in my blog today.
“Hello friends. I really love your new name. I think it is inspiring and to the point. I guess reinventing could be misunderstood as we hopefully all agree that the Church is God’s invention and needs to be rediscovered and revitalized rather than reinvented, which too many are doing too much of – in my opinion, that is! But I am sure people who know you and your heart knew what you meant.”
“For what it’s worth, I’m so glad you’ve changed your name. Was always just a little uncomfortable with reinventing. So I think this is a great name and still the same great vision.”
“Like your new name much better Don…great choice…gives a more accurate picture of your ministry.”
“I really like that name Don. Its inspiring.”
“Cheering you on Don & MJ!”
“Says it all!”
By the way, we have changed our website access to reflect our new name. The URL has been simplified to rtc21.org. Perhaps it has been a while since you have visited our website, this would be a great time to check it out.
The timing of the name change is also aligned with the new initiative just announced by the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada, the fellowship of churches we are so proud to be a part of. Check out the link below to learn more about the revitalization and multiplication vision of the PAOC.
So what’s in a name? The opportunity to revitalize the church around the world with new life, new vitality and vigour!
Until next time…
